Conversion of a photographer's studio to a house
A fascinating building which had been used as a sculptor's and photgrapher's studio.

The building is Grade II listed with some interesting details.

We aimed to work with the existing fabric at times matching interventions (such as new doors) and at times using contemporary styling such as with the new mezzanine and their balconies. Servicing (bathrooms, air conditioning and electric cables) had to be subtly concealed, using the new mezzanines and low level match boarding.

This helped to create a building which respects the existing fabric and takes pride in it's new lease of life. Part of the works involved a new staircase which enabled the basement to be fully used.

Services provided - Architects drawings including planning & tender.

Entrance

In the double height entrance, we exposed the old brick and brought out the old york  stone paving on the floor. Our contemporary interventions were the book shelves and electricity cupboard.

Main front room

Our interventions varied - in places we exactly replicated the existing such as the four folding doors between the front and rear room and in other parts we have used contemporary styling such as the glass balustrading to the new mezzanines.

Rear room - ground floor

The main features of the rear room are the mezzanine which forms a comfortable retreat and the kitchen. The kitchen units are made of reclaimed teak boards with a blue zodiac worktop and glass splashback. The units are top of the range Meile.

Basement - gym & bathroom

The basement used to be accessed by a tiny circular cast iron stair. We put in a new staircase and opened up an old window to produce light airy space to be used as a gym. Adjacent is a luxurious bathroom.

First floor bedroom with en suite bathroom

There is only one room at first floor level which is over the entrance hall. An old opening was reopened and glass shower screen used to maintain the detail of the  opening. Also a line of wardrobes conceals the air conditioning system.
